Oilseed Rape Establishment
Cousins of Emneth offers an innovative cultivation concept for the rapid establishment of Oilseed Rape with minimal soil disturbance, that significantly reduces the germination of problem grassweeds in the crop.
Oil Drill
Oil Seed Rape Establishment System
The Oil Drill is a purpose built tool for the establishment of oil seed rape. It utilises the proven principles of the Micro-Wing Tine and ‘Leg Zone’ press, to give minimal surface disturbance, significantly reducing the germination of grass weeds in the crop.
The new model which is fuly trailed, features 10 unique Micro Wing Tines @ 600mm centres, working at a depth of 4″-6″ followed by aligned Razor Rings which localise & intensify pressing action in the moist ‘Leg Zone’ only.
Ahead of each tine is a cutting disc, which eases the wayfor the tine, giving less surface disturbance &allowing tines to run cleaner, each disc is individually mounted on a rubber suspension unit.
Rape seed is applied directly behind the tines, and can be combined with a micro nutrient if desired. The Razor Ring ‘Leg Zone’ press follows, which
focuses consolidation over the seeded areas ensuring consistent seed depth & coverage with minimal moisture loss. Slug pellets can then be applied in the cultivated zone only.
The Oil Drill disturbs less than 20% of the soil surface with each pass and therefore requires reduced horse power & provides excellent fuel economy, when compared to other establishment systems.
Because the seedbed is largely undisturbed by this targeted system, most weed seeds are left on the ground surface, avoiding the germination of black
grass seed & broadleaved weeds. Field trials have shown reduced charlock, cleavers & volunteer cereals in the crop.
The minimal disturbance of the seedbed also allows for optimum residual activity from grass weed herbicides, a key building block in the control of grass weeds throughout the rotation.

V Form™ Plus - Rapeseed Ready
Includes everything you need to establish your Oil Seed Rape.
The Micro-Wing tine coupled with Techneat Seeder equipment and Razor Ring leg zone press wheels creates perfect soil conditions for successful OSR
establishment.
Suitable for use across a very wide range of UK mineral soils.
The Micro-Wing is the result of collaborative development work between Cousins and Hutchinsons, bringing together the skills and knowledge of both machinery and agronomy specialists. Significant advances in achieving excellent crop establishment while minimising the burden of grassweeds in the crop (especially blackgrass) have been demonstrated in field-scale assessments. This allows for very high levels of grassweed control to be realised from herbicide inputs, thereby removing crop competition from pernicious weeds.
An important element of this technique is to control volunteers and germinated weeds in the stubble with glyphosate treatment. This assists in the early establishment of the crop by the removal of competitive weeds and volunteers.
The Micro-Wing tine is made from hard wearing heat treated Boron steel combined with Hardox and fits into the standard leg bracket on a Cousins V Form. The depth of “draw” through the soil can be varied but the optimum for most soils is 5-6″. The rate of work is rapid, allowing for crop establishment in a single pass through cereal stubbles.
In-crop herbicide treatments then deliver very high levels of weed control (99% control of 100 plants leaves 1/m? compared to 99% control of 1,000 plants leaving 10/m2).
The series of pictures (opposite) show the development of an oilseed rape crop at the Hutchinsons National Blackgrass Centre of Excellence site at Brampton, Huntingdon. After drilling, the seed germinated rapidly and established a very good stand, which continued to grow and fil out in to the space created by the wider drill widths.
By early November the crop had achieved complete ground cover, further assisting with weed control by smothering weeds beneath the canopy.
It has also been confirmed that all varieties of oilseed rape (conventional, hybrid and semi-dwarf types) can be established using the OSR Micro-Wing technique.
